A Leading Actor

- Just read the Gospels ... Mary of Magdala is the female character most often cited in these documents. The Gospels make her a privileged witness and a leading actor.
And what else?
- Even within the group of those who follow Jesus she takes precedence. Note, indeed, that when she is mentioned in the company of other women, her name is always at the top of the list, even before Jesus’ own aunt and almost always in relation with her.
The fact that her name is systematically mentioned first ... is it so important?
- It is highly significant. Nothing is left to chance in the sacred texts: the fact that a character is systematically mentioned first in this type of document, as is the case here, necessarily implies that he occupies the first place. The custom then was to respect the hierarchy. So, this notion of order – especially for the first rank – was scrupulously respected by the scribes, and any semblance of derogation was considered significant and worthy of comment.
There is no doubt that within the women’s group Mary of Magdala is clearly a “leader” …
- She is very clearly presented as the leader of the group and everything seems to indicate that she is a lonely woman: probably a widow. It is she, and she alone in John 20, who paid the last respects to Jesus, a role which was the responsibility of the closest relatives of the deceased. And she is the first one to whom the Risen One appeared.
Why should she not rather be the intimate companion of Jesus?
- But on that assumption, and assuming Jesus had an intimate companion, where then was his mother at all these key moments?
