How many Women? 

• But now let us go back to John’s verse:

And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala (John 19, 25). 

This passage seems to contradict your thesis ...

• • Quite the contrary! How many women do you think are in this verse?
• Three… maybe four: as we can see in some paintings of the Passion.
  • This is the opinion of most exegetes. But, according to this reading, established by cross-checking with other texts, these three or four women present at the foot of the Cross would all have been named “Mary” ...
• Four different “Mary” at the foot of the Cross!?
  • Yes. It seems a lot, even for who knows that Mary was the most common female name among Palestinian Jews ... The scholars who opted for four women divided the sentence as follows:

And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother (A),

And the sister of his mother (B),

Mary, the wife of Clopas (C),

And Mary of Magdala (D). 

Those who opted for three women cut it as follows: 

And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother (A),

And the sister of his mother, Mary, the wife of Clopas (B),

And Mary of Magdala (C). 

According to this reading, more in keeping with Church tradition, “the sister of his mother, Mary, the wife of Clopas” must be understood as designating one and the same person.

• And what is the correct sequencing?
  • Neither of the two. Although the second is closer to the truth ...
• So what?
